I love using this blog to share recent sessions, announce promotions and contests, and maintain a great on-going, client communication. School Daze {Castle Rock Children's Photographer}

For the past three years I have had the honor of photographing the delightful kiddos at the Primrose School of Castle Rock. I have seen them grow by leaps and bounds over the past few years and many have also become wonderful family clients of mine as well. I recognize their children around town, at the pool, parks and grocery stores. It gives me such joy to know these children and get to see them as they grow and change. This year I had the privilege of adding another school - Castle Rock Adventure Club Preschool and Pre-K. This one is especially dear to my heart because both of my boys have gone through their amazing program. Their teachers and director mean the world to me as they have shaped the minds and morals of Jackson and Holden and hundreds of other children in our community.

One other addition to this past years' School Picture Day agenda was the Homeschool Group of Castle Rock. My best friend homeschools her son and I do a picture day for him each year to commemorate the school year, so I knew there was a need for "picture day" within this community of children. What a remarkable group of kiddos and parents! I'll stop yapping now and roll a few pictures from the 2011 School Picture Days in and around Castle Rock. Cheers!

That all aside, I have put together some of my favorite portraits from this season's holiday sessions. I hope to do some catch up on full session posting in the month ahead, but I thought I'd share a few and take the time to thank YOU for a wonderful year for me and my business! I can't thank you enough for choosing me, entrusting me, with your family's precious memories. It is an absolute honor and joy capturing your beautiful families, adorable children and itty-bitty-days-old-newborns. I feel so blessed to have a job that I love, and the amazing clients who have been in front of my lens over the past 3 years. Family Christmas {Personal}

Uploading my personal portraits to my professional blog is sort of making me feel out of place, but at the same time, I kept a personal "family blog" for over 6 years now (Tales from the Crib) and as my business has grown my personal blog has suffered. Once upon a time I shared our family portraits, stories and goings-on with family and friends through that blog. And the more I have worked, the less I have been able to keep that personal space updated. Tonight I decided to forgo the personal blog and add my personal blog post to my professional page. Such a large part of my business is being able to relate to families, children and newborns, and being a mama to my own two sweet, rowdy boys helps me in that area a great deal!

Our family spent Christmas here in Colorado. My own mama was supposed to come visit us for the holidays but sadly the blizzard we got just a few days back shut down the highway she would take to get here, so she spent the holiday with my sister and we spent the holiday as a family of 4. The boys were over the moon excited for Santa's big visit (I'm wondering how many years of that I have left, especially from my quizzical 7 year old who can't quite sort out how Santa can hit up ALL those houses in such a short amount of time). We opened gifts and enjoyed a big, fat meal with our dearest friends (I was too busy cooking Prime Rib and 'taters to capture any pictures of the meal or our time spent with them). It was quiet and fun and peaceful and perfect. Exactly, in my opinion, what the holiday is all about.

I hit up Monument for these family portrait on perhaps the windiest day of 2011. It was chilly, windy and hectic, but like pros, the Pike family took it all in stride! We opted to stay close to their home that day, which was fine with me. They live in a darling (I mean DARLING) house that Mr Pike actually grew up in, decorated with Mrs Pike's tasteful and delightful vintage flair. They also have some major land around their house so it was a truly idyllic spot. Plus it gave the wee-little Pike children a place to warm up in between their own portraits. I love how sweet and loving this family is - I think the little ones are a perfect match for my little vintage girl and boy logo, too, dontcha think?

We snuck in a quick headshot for Mr Pike, who is on the District 38 school board - all school board leaders should be as dapper as he is!

Thank you Pike family for being just the awesome people that you are!

I premiered this session slideshow a couple of months back, but with the craziness of the holiday season upon us I didn't get a chance to share the individual portraits...until now! This stylized session was put together by my best friend's husband as a surprise gift to her for her birthday. We plotted and planned and came up with a fun, dramatic shoot that knocked her socks off...or at the very least, brought happy tears to her eyes! Major kudos to Jackson and Allie for totally "bringing it" to this session, and to Gunther Toody's for allowing us to use their restaurant as our quintessentially perfect backdrop! And of course, thanks Tyler for making the session happen in the first place!

{Baby Neli} Castle Rock Newborn Photographer

Sweet, beautiful Neli came to my studio at 9 days of age...how lucky am I? Her mama and daddy are actually my neighbors here in Castle Rock, and since my studio is in my home, her commute was quite easy. She was a dreamy, perfect little babe. She slept the entire time (around day 14 babies tend to "wake up!" which is why I prefer getting them into the studio before that age). I adore her golden red hair, her smooshable lips and her tiny, perfect fingers and toes. She is, in a word, perfection.

Neli is the 4th girl in the B family, and I do declare that Mr B is quite outnumbered at this juncture. By the smile on his face it seems he doesn't mind a bit, if you ask me! Thank you Mr and Mrs B for sharing your darling little one with me - it was an honor capturing her!

My schedule this fall has been filled with the most lovely, wonderful and dear repeat client families. I love (adore!) seeing the children grow and change and develop little personalities. It is the same joy I get watching my own children grow and change. The D family was in front of my lens for the 3rd time a few weeks back. Previously in 2010 there was a maternity/family session, then a newborn session, and now a family of 4 session! We met in downtown Castle Rock to explore our quaint town with a smiling Emery who has just turned one and a curious Merrick who is nearing three. I love this family even more because the beautiful Mrs D was my own son's 1st grade teacher last year. She is an exceptional teacher and has played a huge role in the molding of my son. She even continues to be an ear for me when I have questions and concerns. She has taken a year off from teaching to be with her beautiful babies, but the teacher in her is always present. And lest I forget Mr. D, they say behind every great man is a great woman but I say the same is true the other way around - behind every great woman is a great man. Thank you D family for letting me peek into your family for the morning. It was a delight!

One of my favorite families! I love photographing the S family. They are laid back and chill, and up for having fun. Their boys, Aaron and Riley, are so handsome (I missed seeing their eldest son Evan this year!), and so sweet and polite. Aaron is 12 years older than Riley, and is sweet and patient with his little brother - an awesome trait for a big brother to have. Riley is almost 3 and I started capturing him at Primrose School of Castle Rock when he was just a baby, and now, 3 years later, he's on the move and talking up a storm. It's a treat to see the little ones grow up over the years. And Diane and Jim, well look at their portraits, their love is so apparent and so sweet - nothing insincere going on there, all love and respect. I love that. Thank you again S family for inviting me into your hearts for the afternoon!

I was more than honored when Erin of Erin Blackwell Photography asked me recently to capture her gorgeous (and boy do I mean gorgeous!) family of 6 for fall portraits. In the past year Erin has become more than just an industry pal, she's become a true friend. I value her friendship just as much as I value being able to talk shop with her. I truly loved getting to capture her family and getting to know them a bit better as well. I can't deny it, the F Family is one of my favorite families to photograph. This was their 3rd year of having me out to capture their gorgeous family, and every year we have more fun than the last! This year April wanted something a little different, a little more styled and a wee bit more classic. She had me at classic! I sent her a "What to Wear" storyboard and she built their wardrobes around those suggestions. I love the colors - the soft grays and pinks with splashes of a deeper plum. Very vintage, very fall, and all classic. Remind me again that these were taken in 2011...

You may recall sweet Allie from the stylized vintage session I put together last month. Her mama Lisa is one of my best friends in the world, and also a huge support to me as a mom, a friend, and as a part of my "village" helping me with my children. I could not do what I do without her. So her husband Tyler and I put together another stylized session, including both of their children, as a surprise to her on her birthday. She had no idea. We snuck away to hunt for costumes and props, plotted via emails and phone calls and text messages, and swore her kiddos and my kiddos and my husband to secrecy. The result - a fabulous fifties inspired session that brought on tears when she watched the video last night. I'll share the still images soon, but wanted to share the fun video slideshow I prepared. MAJOR props to Tyler for putting it all together, and Jackson and Allie for being the most fabulous of models - seriously, get these kids into some theater stat!

Baby J is back and three months old! His last visit had him sleeping almost the entire session. This time around he was yet again, a perfect little model. He coo'd, batted his eyelashes, smiled and winked for the first half of our session, then promptly fell asleep in his mama's arms for the second half. Kate and Justin are beyond blessed with this little fellow, and I feel honored to have been asked to capture him again as he grows!

How lucky am I to get to do what I do!? This is the 3rd time I've captured the D family, and this time there was a new addition to the bunch! Baby O was in top modeling form, flashing his sparkling eyes and sweet baby smile. I swooned... And I loved getting to see his big sister again, too. Actually, Ella's been in front of my lens 4 times now - I photographed her at Primrose two years ago as well. She's grown into such a beautiful and outgoing young lady, and a wonderful big sister, too. Baby O is so lucky to be surrounded by all the love in his life! Courting - A Vintage Love Story: Castle Rock Child Photographer

I'm a slightly theatrical person. Scratch that, I'm completely 100% theatrical. I have a degree in it, dontcha' know! I've always, always loved the theatre - everything about it. The costumes, the lights, the plot, the music, the backstage scurry. I have the fondest memories of my own time spent on my college stage. My resume holds rolls like Emily in Our Town, Laura in Glass Menagerie, and Shelby in Steel Magnolias. I had visions of Broadway! Never mind the story that took me from that dream to the dream I live now - living in a quaint small town with two amazing little boys, my sweetheart of a husband, and a career as a photographer that I adore. I can still make the theatrics happen, just in a different medium.

So I had a vision a few weeks ago - a vintage vision. Because beyond the theatre I also love all things vintage. I wanted to create a series of portraits that showed a combination of the "vintage" and the "theatre." I coerced a couple of little ones into helping me (my son Holden and my friend's daughter Allie), and enlisted my friend Lisa with marshmallows and handy wipes. We hit the trail for Sedalia and discovered the "look" we were going for. The train tracks. A vintage tow truck. An open field. We let the story tell itself...

(We did attract a few on-lookers during our adventures. One fellow - a life-long Sedalia resident- actually stopped his truck on the train tracks and give directions to the kids. Another gentleman gave us permission to use his yellow truck. And several cars slowed down to watch as we frolicked in the nearby field.)

Did you know that my studio is in my home here in Castle Rock, Colorado - located in a beautiful little neighborhood in The Meadows? We absolutely love living here, being involved in our community, and watching our boys grow and go to nearby schools and make what we hope are lifelong friends. It is what I love about our community, and also why I love having a studio in my home. If you come to a studio session (for newborns and little ones who aren't quite walking) you will likely meet my family - I shuttle them down to the basement with their Daddy when I'm working. But they are here likely playing the Wii or outside in the sandbox, and when I wrap up a session usually they come up to meet my clients. After all, my clients are usually totally entertained by the 4 and 7 year old boys who light up the room when they see babies smiling and cooing.

The other reason I love using my home for studio sessions is because the props I use are a part of my life. The crate I use frequently was a $3 garage sale find when I first moved to Seattle - it is now a coffee table in our living room, and a prop in my studio. Bowls and baskets are gathered (and washed!) from throughout my house for each studio session. Chairs are moved from my dining room, boys' rooms, and even my family room. Accessories are from my frequent trips to local antique shops - my favorite is The Barn here in Castle Rock. Or even the Task Force Thrift shop! These accessories live in my home, and then are moved weekly for my weekend sessions. I also sometimes stray from my studio into the living room to utilize the hardwood floor and my front door for gorgeous light. Look closely - if you see hardwood floors in my portraits, they are not fakes. They may have scuffs from a light saber or roller skates though!

I put a lot of my life and myself into my portraits, and I hope that shows through in my work.

And now, a session that took place all over my house - not just the studio. This is my niece Chloe who visited us earlier this month. You've seen her before. My how she's grown! My heart overflows with love for this gorgeous girl, and her sweet, beautiful Mama!

B Family - Littleton Colorado Family Photographer

Sometimes I meet a family and just completely click with them and the time together just flies by. That was the B family for me. They found me after they saw their friend's portraits - The F Family. I {love} referrals! Makes me so happy to see connections amongst my clients, and even better when I feel like I've made new friends in the process.

We met up at my uncle's house in Roxborough Park - a private home with lush gardens and views of the stunning red rocks that dart up in this secluded area of Littleton. We had a tea party amongst the flowers with Izzy and Annie (how sweet are their names!?) and their gorgeous parents laughed and played with their sweet girls, and even snuck in a kiss or two...I love when that happens.

And a side note - I'm sharing all black and whites for their session because I love how the contrast works with their wardrobe choices. There were plenty of bright, full color portraits in their final collection, though!

As most of my regular readers know, I have two sweet, funny, wonderful little boys whom I adore with all my heart and soul. I feel so blessed to be a mama to two little boys. So that being said, I love when I get a splash of pink in my studio every once in awhile. Especially one as wide-eyed and precious as this little one! She stole my heart with her big, soulful brown eyes, and petal perfect mouth. And just so I didn't get tooooo pinkified, we let big brother in on a few portraits at the end of our session. He's pretty darn handsome himself, I must say!

Little man there went to preschool with my little guy. They were in separate classes but often played together before class and so Jenny and I had a chance to chat, as we moms are likely to do when our little ones are entertaining themselves for a change. I never mentioned my career, beyond being a full time mama, to her. But she'd seen my car (I have a small sign on the door) and looked me up. I was more than happy to hear from her, and to schedule her family's portrait session! The K family were moving from Colorado to California just a few days after their session, so it was decided that a very "Castle Rock" focused session was in order. We visited the various unique spots around town and let the little ones play and run around. We even managed a glimpse of the castle rock in the background of a few of their portraits. In addition their little miss just turned one so it was even more of a cause for celebration! The day was hot but the laughter was plentiful. It made for a perfect afternoon!

A fond farewell...

This was one of those sessions that just utterly hit my heart strings and reminded me how blessed I am to have the job that I have, capturing beautiful, precious moments for families. I met Debbie several months ago via a networking group we belong to. I liked her and her mother in law instantly. There was a love between those two ladies that was undeniable. We chatted and got to know each other over the next several months and I could tell there was a depth to Debbie that went beyond her kindness and her generosity. That became even more clear when I went to photograph her family and more specifically her darling daughter Ashlee. I shared the morning with Debbie and her husband Andrew, Ashlee, and Andrew's parents. There was a lot of laughter and smiles and the fresh scent of flowers in the air. There was also something else about the morning that was intense and heavy but I couldn't put my finger on it. As we wrapped up the session Debbie thanked me profusely and shared with me how very much Ashlee was an angel in all of their lives. I left with a heavy heart, but also a sense of hope that I had captured Ashlee in all of her spirit and joy.

A week or so later I had the honor of sharing Ashlee's slideshow with Debbie, and we both laughed and cried together. I saw, once again, what an angel Ashlee is in Debbie and Andrew's life, and how much the images mean to them. Debbie, and her family, are more than just "clients" to me -they have become friends. It is one of the greatest joys of my job. But even more so with this special family.

I thank you for trusting me with your portraits, Kiss family, and with your memories. Thank you also for sharing the story of your journey with Leighton, and with Ashlee. He will not be forgotten, as he lives on in his sister's soul.

Happy Father's Day from crib tales photography! I love that I get to share with you a beautiful family on this day. I captured the B family last weekend in downtown Littleton, and as I saw the toe-head blond children heading towards me that day, not to mention the rock-star-gorgeous couple carrying them, I knew we were in for a totally awesome session. We hung out. We played. We blew bubbles. Some of us may or may not have eaten grass. It was, in a word, perfect! Check 'em out!

This family, oh my, gorgeous! How do I get so lucky to have such beautiful clients?? This was so much fun. Lisa and fam were not once but twice rescheduled due to freaky spring weather woes. We finally got them back on the schedule and she approached me with a fun idea for a more stylized session...a vintage car that her friend was refinishing. It was still in its rustic stage but was drivable and more important, very kid-friendly. We met at a downtown Denver tortilla factory (yeah you read that right) where her friend stored his car (separate from the tortillas mind you) last weekend and immediately clicked. It was just fun being in their family's presence! We played around for well over an hour just checking out the 'hood, finding cool structures to photograph against, and oh yeah, they did some kiss'n, too! What a totally cool and loving family! You could absolutely feel the love, as they say.

And the result, well, it was just magical! I can't thank you enough Lisa, David, Samuel and Gabriella. You allowed me to capture you all in a very cool way; I just love having the opportunity to be creative and fresh with portrait sessions. Thanks for rock'n it out!

Oh sweet baby J...9 days old and as sweet as pie. He slept. The entire time. That never happens for me! Maybe it is because he was the youngest babe I've captured. Or maybe he's just easy natured like that? I don't know, but he wins major props for being so sweet, easy and malleable (yep, turns out, babies are malleable!) I loved every minute of this session. And love how much his Mama and Daddy doted on him. He was a long time awaited, and truly, beyond that, he is crazy loved.

This was my third time photographing the S family - how fun is that?! I love photographing families multiple times, seeing how their children grow and change. It always touches me when I'm asked back again to photograph a family. Knowing that they entrust me to capture their memories is the highest form of flattery.

I loved seeing how big Jackson and Olivia have gotten, and more so how their personalities have bloomed. We had a delightful (if slightly chilly - brrrr that wind!) morning in downtown Monument. It was a perfect spot for exploring and playing and checking out the vintage mustang parked nearby!

The N family found me via Treehouse Discovery where I have several of my portraits on display. I was excited to meet the whole family - especially when Mama N mentioned she really wanted the older children's unique personalities to shine through and that they would be able to wear whatever they wanted to reflect that. How cool is that? We met at gorgeous DeKoevend Park in Centennial and enjoyed the hour playing around, blowing bubbles, climbing trees and just enjoying the afternoon. This was such a special treat for me - to photograph Miss Piper's one year portraits. You see, I captured Piper's parents' wedding portraits two years ago. The only wedding I've ever shot. And believe me if all brides were as chill on their wedding day as Amber I probably would feel more at ease doing wedding photography! I have also captured Amber's beautiful step daughters on more than one occasion. It is a joy connecting with past clients and seeing them grow and change and in this case, expand their family.

We started Piper's session in the studio but quickly moved on to the beautiful outdoors where she could explore and be, well, one! If this sweet girl's eyes don't melt your heart well then I don't know what else to say -- she's completely stolen mine. Every once in awhile I get a call for something completely different than my normal portrait sessions. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE doing portrait sessions -they are my true love and passion, but how fun to get an offer to do something unique and different...like food photography! I actually love photographing food and if you were to look at my personal blog you'd see that I shoot photos of food a lot at my home. Something about food not moving is appealing to me -- oh yeah, and I love to eat!

Kim from A Wild Thyme called me to see if I would be interested in photographing some of her most delectable menu items at a cocktail party she was catering in The Village in Castle Rock. I may or may not have squealed "yes!" over the phone. Ok, I did. Kim's team is a beautifully well oiled machine. They worked non-stop the time I was there and take it from me, the food was to-die-for-delicous! I can only hope the images I did for her do her delicious food justice. I think you will see from the photos that attention to detail is definitely a priority. Next time you are in need of a caterer they are the best of the best, bar-none!

This was definitely not my typical portrait session! I got a call from the owner of Water 2 Wine DTC a few weeks ago asking if I might be available to do some photography for an event they were holding at their winery. I was intrigued! It was a pre-Oscar murder-mystery party complete with a cast of characters, a murder victim, costumed guests, delectable edibles, and of course, wine! I had a blast capturing the event and all show that went with it. Here's a sneak peek of a few of the shots from the evenings' festivities! At last I'm getting sweet, beautiful Aubrey Anna up on the blog. It is no secret that I'm a girly-girl-living-in-a-smelly-boy-world (all 3 of whom I adore with all my heart and soul), but of course given the chance to capture a sweetness like this I don't just jump I LEAP! Aubrey refused to sleep. I think I have that affect on infants. But she didn't fuss. She was fully taking in every thing possible. We did the session in the studio, predominately with natural window light, but with a bit of help from my studio lighting as well. It was the perfect set up. And Aubrey was the perfect baby. Her parents and big brother weren't too shabby either!

This past fall I had the honor, once again, of doing the school portraits for the Primrose School here in Castle Rock. I can't tell you what a treat it was for me to be asked back to the school and to see so many familiar sweet faces! It was so fun to see how much so many of the children had grown and changed over the year, and to see new faces added to the infant room as well. They are such a delightful school - the staff, parents and children are phenomenal, and I had a blast photographing them over a two-day time span! With their parent's permission I am able to share with you some of my favorites from our 2010 session! Brittany and Jake met me at a far away, hidden, rustic spot for their natural light mini-session --don't try and find it on a map, it is unfindable! I jest. This is Brittany's mom's front porch just a few blocks away from my own house! I have a new love for photographing clients on front porches. They are relaxed and at ease and the light is filtered and dreamy, perfect for adding sparkle to eyes and ease to poses. It also goes to show that you don't need big open fields or colorful gardens to make a portrait session work - you just need love, and these two have that part down to a T!

Nora and I went to middle school together. 20 years ago. In Texas. We found each other again on Facebook. She now lives in Washington (my adopted home state). She was pregnant with her 2nd son and the photographer she had used for years had retired. She said she wished I lived closer so I could do her newborn pictures. I joked with her that if she flew me out I would happily take pictures of her new son and family. She booked me a flight immediately. And thus our friendship was renewed, I got to enjoy a mini-getaway to my beloved city, and most importantly I got to take portraits of this gorgeous family in a city of stunning, filtered light. Lubbock Texas Family Photographer? Wait, I thought crib tales photography was Colorado based? Well yes, but I do travel, and wherever I travel I'm always happy to do a session or four while I'm there! And since Lubbock happens to be the very town I spent 21 years of my life in, I do visit there at least once a year. So if you are looking for a family photographer in Lubbock, at certain times of the year I may just be your gal!

Now on with the post...

To say I was looking forward to this session is an understatement. I grew up with Carrie - we've known each other since we were three years old! We took dance together, went to preschool, middle school and high school together! We even went to the same college. That is a life long friend. Carrie asked me to photograph her three gorgeous children when I was in town, and I was so so so happy to oblige. We started off at their beautiful new home and ended up out in a cotton field that also housed a fireworks stand. I was in heaven! It didn't hurt that her kids are adorable, outgoing and beyond polite - those Texas mamas teach their please's and thank you's like nobody else.

Thank you Carrie and your entire gang for such a wonderful session. I can't wait to see you again next time I'm in town!

October is Breast Caner Awareness Month...

This is Robin. Last year I photographed Robin and her family just before the holidays. We are similar in so many ways - we even live just a few blocks from each other we found out. Like me, she is a mother of 2 small, darling children. Like me, we are both in the "upper end" of our 30's. Like me, she has a loving husband, a beautiful home, great friends, a caring family, a job she loves, and children she treasures. Two months ago Robin was diagnosed with breast cancer. No family history. No clues leading up to it. Just an unexplained lump, and then her world crashing in on her. Robin has asked me, entrusted me, with taking portraits of her before and after her mastectomy surgery. The images below she has given me permission to share. They were taken just 4 days before her surgery. We spent a little over an hour together in her home - there was laughter and tears and frustration. And in that time I saw her strength building, and her spirit ready to fight.

Robin is now recovering, slowly, from that surgery and another unexpected one. She will be starting treatment soon. She has asked me to document that as well. I think of Robin on a daily basis now. How her world was rocked. How her life and her family's life was dramatically changed in a moment. And how 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with this disease. How real that is. Both of my grandmothers were breast cancer survivors, and I know Robin will be as well. She has a strength that she is just now discovering, and that is redefining who she is. Thank you Robin for letting me into this very difficult and private journey. You are an inspiration to me and to all women.

It is safe to say that I am a wee bit behind in updating the blog. OK, a lot behind. Three sessions behind, soon to be more. But hey, so it goes. If you want to see updated sneak peeks as they happen you should check out the crib tales photography facebook page! But I digress... Here are a few sneak peeks from three recent sessions. I'd like to share a lot more, and hope I can get to it soon. But right now I'm editing portraits of 76 children (yes, 76!) from a local private school portrait day session. More to come on that soon, too, I hope! But for now, enjoy these beautiful smiling mugs!
